More About Joe Eagle

Joe Eagle-Eye Johnson (Joe Eagle) was born and raised in Mound Bayou, which was founded as an all-black community in the Mississippi Delta by former slaves in 1870. He is a talented musician who got his start in the music and recording industry as drummer and publishing intern for Grammy nominated and multi-platinum record award music producer Ed Townsend.  Under Townsends direction Joe Eagle played drums for Grammy Award nominee Dee Dee Warwick,  and collaborations with artist from the group Surface and others. He was the Drummer for former STAX & Malaco recording artist Little Milton, touring the United States. He played drums for Stax Records Blues artist Albert King touring the United States, France, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden and Finland playing major venues Such as The Fox Theater, Circle Theater Beacon Theater, Long Beach Blues Festival, Apollo Theater and various major festivals such as Sacramento Music Festival, Chicago Blues Festival, B.B. King Homecoming festival and a host of other festivals and historic music venues. Joe has also played behind legendary musicians on several occasions such as Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jack Bruce, and many more. And has opened for greats such as Taj Mahal, Etta James, Luther Allison, BB King, Bobby Bland, Dr. John, Ray Charles and the list goes on. 

After spending significant time gaining these experiences and developing expertise under these legendary artist, Joe later went on to attend the Arts Institute of Atlanta for Entertainment Business.

 

In 1997 Joe started the origination Eagle Music & Media Academy. This organization was established an outgrowth of Ed Townsend’s earlier experiment and Joe Johnson’s professional experience.  He teaches after-school courses in African and Latin drumming for local youth, and provides classes in career development for youth.

 

 But the long term goal is to record and document the rich musical and historical heritage of the Mississippi Delta.

 

“The easiest way to turn a poverty stricken area around,” Joe says, “is for professionals to take youth under their wings and teach them how to become successful by allowing the youth to work with them.”
